Bioenergy
"Member states have committed themselves to targets for electricity from renewable energy. In most cases, it looks impossible to achieve these without using biomass". (Commission of the European Communities: Biomass Action Plan 2005)
As well as displacing fossil fuels in transport through production of biodiesel and bioethanol facilities, Bioverda is committed to developing electricity and heat plants fuelled either by the thermal treatment of biomass (creating steam to run a steam turbine) or from the utilisation of biogas derived from anaerobic digestion / landfill gas (either in internal combustion engines or gas turbines).
In the short term, Bioverda Bioenergy is developing biomass thermal treatment facilities in the UK, Ireland, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and North America, and is now the largest independent landfill gas company in Ireland. Bioverda is also in the process of site selection for a large anaerobic digestion facility to process a number of organic waste streams in Ireland. Bioverda believes that through bioenergy development programmes, fossil fuel reliance can be reduced, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, securing a reliable electricity supply and stimulating economic growth in rural areas.
In the longer term, Bioverda is following technology developments in the areas of gasification, anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis with a view to improving bioenergy efficiency as and when the appropriate technologies become available.
